Promoting ethical children's clothes and toys - Hatley

Hatley is a family-run business. It was founded in 1987 by husband and wife John and Alice Oldman, named after where they’d recently moved to from Toronto – North Hatley, Quebec.

And despite Hatley since becoming a global brand sold in 38 countries around the world, it’s still family run. John and Alice’s three sons took over in 1999 and are still running the place: Jeremy is the chief executive officer, Nick is the creative director, and Chris is the company president. The brothers continue to ensure that Hatley stands for the same principles on which it was first founded: family, thoughtful designs, made-to-last quality and, of course, a sense of humour.1

Sustainable, ethical, durable…

Hatley is an sustainable brand. They design durable garments from ethically-sourced materials. Did you know that 350,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year?2 Brands like Hatley are helping us to address this issue by making clothes that last and that can have multiple owners, rather than just being thrown away after a few uses.

Hatley clothes are designed to be handed down, “from sibling to sibling, to friend, to neighbour… to whoever the next lucky child is”3

“We realised there’s nothing better when it comes to being environmentally-friendly than creating a product that lasts.”
– Jeremy Oldman4

Not only the materials themselves built to last, all the aspects of design are too – the timeless colour palettes, styles, and hand-drawn prints are also built to “transcend seasons and fleeting fashion trends”.3

The brand also practices ethical sourcing, which is all about the way in which products are made and also about the workers who make them.

Hatley is “forever committed” to:

  • sourcing responsibly and sustainably;
  • to ensuring safe and fair working conditions for all, throughout our supply chain;
  • to being mindful of the environmental and social impacts our sourcing process may bring and minimizing any risks by choosing wisely.3

All their products are tested for safety and quality, chemicals, environmental risks, and to ensure any claims made are true (for example, their swimwear range really is chlorine and salt-water resistant – it’s been tested!).
